Synopsis
Claire Beauchamp Randall, a nurse in World War II, mysteriously travels back in time to Scotland in 1743. There, she meets a Highland warrior and is drawn into an epic rebellion. Moore (the TV series' developer), his team decided to keep the words in Gaelic rather than translate them into English. This kept the narrative in the first person while showing Claire's inability to understand Gaelic.
The opening music changes from season to season to reflect what is happening in the story
This idea was suggested by producer David Brown, who said he had seen something similar in Skin Deep (1998), a foreign alternative film starring actor and singer Gustavo Goulart. In some episodes, the characters say "OK", an American term that did not come into use until the 19th century. In the first half of season 2 (which is set in France), some of the lyrics are in French. In the second half of season 2 (which is mostly about preparing for war), a militaristic drum roll is added to the opening music.

During season 3, there are tribal drums added because much of the season is set in the West Indies. In season 4, bluegrass fiddle and banjos are added, plus some lyrics are sung in a southern accent because the season is set mostly in America. I'm late to discovering this series and managed to watch season 7A in a month.
But my goodness, the beginning of season 3 was a slog
The first 2 seasons feel like a completely different show, kept me hooked and wanting just one more episode. I know a lot of people don't like Richard, but man, I love him as Roger, he just brings a realism to the character for me. Sophie, however, looks like an acting student trying too hard to play a spoiled brat. Her scenes are completely painful to watch and there is no chemistry between her and Richard, and man, whose idea was that terrible accent?
Really the wrong actress for the role
